50ft oh casts, comparison incl.
and excl. fly
Purpose
The purpose of this comparison is to show the
impact of the fly.
The comparison is made between two
simulations:
· The 50ft oh ref. cast with a fly included.
· “50ft no fly” simulated without a fly at the end of the leader.
Input, casting stroke
The casting stroke is identical for both
simulations.
The equipment is identical for both simulations with the only
exception being the presence of the fly, see the 50ft
oh ref. cast.

Comment,
animation:
The differences in results between the two
cases are small except in the leader region.
Output, graphs
Differences in rod tip paths and results
versus time are limited between the two simulations and are therefore not
presented here.
Output, energies and work
Differences between the two simulations are
shown below for dissipated work from leader and fly.

Notes:
· With the fly included the dissipation by air drag from the fly
is about two times the dissipation from the leader.
· Without the fly the dissipation by air drag from the fly is, of
course, zero. However, the dissipation by air drag from the leader is more than
twice the air drag from the leader if the fly is included. The high dissipation
by air drag from the leader in the simulation without a fly is due to higher
normal speed between leader and air.
· The work dissipated through material damping is significantly
increased if the fly is removed. This is due to excessive wiggling of the
leader.
