Verification fly rod, static
Purpose
Method
The bending stiffness for a fly rod is modeled as for a hollow
tapered tube with a Young’s modulus varying linearly along the length. The
verification procedure for the static rod properties i.e., bending stiffness
distribution is presented below for one specific rod (4wt rod as an example
below).
The
distributions for bending stiffness, outer diameter and mass density are
presented below:
Note: Mass density excl. the fly line was used in the static
verifications below.
The rod tip deflection of the complete fly rod
and for parts of the rod were measured and computed using the simulation model.
The load at the rod tip was varied giving deflections of the order of 100 mm.
The measured and simulated rod tip deflections are presented below:
The rod tip deflection for the complete rod
subject to a tip load of 104 g was also calculated and measured:
Conclusions
· Comparisons between calculations and measurements show that
computed and measured rod deflections agree within 3%.
· The agreement covers the range of deflections encountered during
a cast, i.e., up to about 1 m deflection.
· The agreement also covers different sections of the rod.
