Casts

Purpose and guidelines

The purpose of this section is to give an overview of and links to simulated casts.

To get familiar with the simulations it is recommended to study the 50ft oh ref. cast, showing one cast only, before moving on to the other casts. Input to and output from this cast are explained in some detail for reference. Also, notation is explained at the end.

The casts may be studied at two levels of detail:

·     Animations with written “Comments, animation” only. The written comments after the animations provide brief explanations to the simulations.

·     Including detailed input and output graphs. The graphs provide details and may be studied to give additional information.

50ft overhead casts:

All 50ft oh casts (“50ft” denotes length of rod + fly line + leader and “oh” overhead) listed below are symmetric casts i.e., the back and forward strokes are symmetric with respect to the vertical axis. The solutions shown are obtained after several casting cycles (several “false casts” back and forth).

If not stated explicitly, the 50ft oh casts were computed using input data for:

·     9ft 5wt rod

·     5wt SA Double Tapered fly line

·     9ft tapered leader

The 50ft oh ref. cast shows one cast with explanations. The comparisons listed below present two casts with explanations limited to differences between the compared simulations.

Complete cast:

The cast starts and ends with the line on the water surface.

“Trout distance” casts:

Competitive “trout distance” casting is controlled by the International Casting Sport Federation. In short, the objective is to maximize casting distance with a specified fly line, 5wt SA Expert Distance. The rod is 9ft and most competitors use stiff rods. A couple of casts resembling trout distance casts have been computed using:

·     stiff rods

·     5wt SA Expert Distance fly line

·     9ft tapered leader

Rollcast:

The rollcast was computed using data for:

·     9ft 5wt rod

·     5wt DT line

·     9ft tapered leader
